In 1964 richtte Willie Neal Johnson uit Texas, zijn band Willie Neal Johnson and the Gospel Keynotes op. Ze toerden in het zuidwesten en produceerden aanvankelijk platen voor Nashboro Records. Later tekenden ze bij Malaco Records in Mississippi. Bij deze platenmaatschappij brachten ze in 1987 het album Going Back With The Lord uit. Soulvolle gospel met af en toe een vleugje disco. De uptempo nummers zoals Tell Me What You Want en het titelnummer Going Back With The Lord vind ik de beste tracks van dit album
The New Keynotes werden in 1999 opgenomen in de Gospel Music Hall of Fame in Detroit en de American Gospel Quartet Hall of Fame in Birmingham, Alabama.
